about
our Flared Staircases
Flared stairs are wider at the bottom than they are at the top.
Most often, the first several treads and risers are flared,
on one or both sides, and the balance of the staircase is straight
or ell shaped.
The staircase shown in the photo on the right was installed
in a Banana Republic retail clothing store in Atlanta, Georgia.
The treads are Brazilian cherry and the rail system consists
of wrought iron balusters and two Brazilian cherry handrails.
In order to meet local commercial code requirements, the rail
system needed to be 42 inches tall yet the handrail itself
was required to be at standard dimensions of about 30 inches
above the nosings.

The flared staircase in the picture on the left is very unique.
It was custom built for the 1996 Masco Showhome in Columbia,
Maryland. Better Homes and Gardens® Special
Interest Publications was one of the sponsors of this home
which was designed by architect Joseph St. Jean of Scholz
Design in Toledo, Ohio. Notice how the Gallery
handrail starts off at the same height on both sides of the
stairs but rises more quickly on the right than on the left.
This is because the steps are angled as well as being flared.
Staircase & Millwork was able to work with the architects,
contractors, and decorators involved with both of these projects
to design and fabricate custom stair and rail systems that
met the specific requirements of two very unique jobs. We
look forward to working on a project with you.
